Exterior Insulation Done Right: Why It Matters and How to Build It

This hands-on session focuses on the practical application of exterior insulation in residential wall assemblies. The session will address both the “why” and the “how” of continuous insulation, including thermal performance, condensation control, durability, attachment strategies, and constructability. Multiple insulation types will be discussed to help attendees understand the tradeoffs between vapor-open and vapor-closed approaches and how those choices relate to climate, wall design, and overall enclosure performance.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the performance benefits of exterior insulation, including improved thermal continuity and reduced thermal bridging.
  • Compare vapor-open and vapor-closed exterior insulation strategies and understand their implications for drying potential and moisture management.
  • Identify key considerations for exterior insulation attachment, sequencing, and integration with adjacent enclosure layers.
  • Understand how regional material familiarity and constructability influence exterior insulation choices.
  • Evaluate practical approaches to detailing exterior insulation in a way that supports durability, buildability, and future integration with windows and flashings.
