Control Layers That Work: WRBs, Airtightness, and Assembly Logic

This hands-on session introduces the logic and sequencing behind modern wall control layers, with a focus on water-resistive barriers, airtightness strategies, and the relationship between the WRB and the rest of the enclosure. Attendees will walk through practical assembly options, compare mechanically attached and self-adhered approaches, and learn how these decisions affect the layers that follow. The goal is to help builders, verifiers, and design professionals understand how to think through the wall as a system, not as a collection of isolated products.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the core functions of the wall control layers, including water management, air control, and vapor control.
  • Distinguish between mechanically attached and self-adhered WRB approaches and understand where each may be appropriate.
  • Understand why sequencing matters and how WRB decisions affect exterior insulation and window installation details.
  • Recognize common continuity failures at transitions, penetrations, and interfaces.
  • Apply a systems-based approach to selecting and sequencing WRB components in high-performance wall assemblies.
