Building a Green Construction Workforce

With the silver tsunami of retirees arriving at the shores of the construction industry, there is a clear need for a new, younger, more diverse, and well-trained workforce. This audience has proven to be drawn to careers where they can make meaningful impacts in their communities and on climate change, which presents a significant opportunity to educate this next generation of construction professionals on how to build high performance homes and improve the health and energy efficiency of existing homes.

This session will outline the various construction-related workforce development training programs being offered locally, the potential impacts of the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF), and the opportunities that exist to make stronger connections between workforce programs and potential employers. The session will also focus on what the high-performance building industry can do to become an effective ally and supporter of Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) communities currently accessing and prospering in this field.
